Intent

Reading

At Ark Priory, we are dedicated to ensuring all children are passionate about reading. We map out immersive learning journeys which are underpinned by high-quality key texts, as detailed in our Reading Spine document. Through reading, we provide multiple opportunities for pupils to develop a love for learning, a passion for discovery and the confidence to explore their imagination. We are determined that all children become highly competent readers and academically prepare for life in primary school and beyond.

Phonics

At Ark Priory Primary Academy, our Intent in Phonics in to teach all children to read accurately with good comprehension and for children to become fluent readers by the end of Year 1.

Implementation

Reading

The Ark Priory curriculum covers purpose-focused genres which align with the National Curriculum. This develops children to be fluent and effective readers, speakers and writers, so that they can communicate their ideas and emotions to others with clarity and conviction.

Phonics

We use the Read, Write, Inc. (RWI) Phonics programme, which is a synthetic phonics and literacy programme for all Nursery, Reception, Year 1 and some Year 2 children within the school.

For every child, regardless of their age, background or need, learns to:

  • Read accurately and fluently and develop a love of reading.
  • Spell, handwrite and develop their ideas for writing.
  • Articulate their understanding and practise what they have been taught.

Children learn the 44 common phonetic sounds in order to be able to independently blend them to develop their reading, writing and spelling skills.

The RWI sessions take place each day. The fast pace and consistent programme is a key element of developing reading skills for all children which is integral for accessing the rest of the school curriculum.

Children also learn to read and spell words that do not conform to regular phonetic patterns (High Frequency Words) and decode both fiction and non-fiction texts through discussion, performance and teacher led activities.
